Summer Berry Griestorte
Summer Berry Griestorte, would make a great red, white & blue cake for 4th July!
Keep the whipped cream white, and use red berries like strawberries or raspberries and blueberries to represent the ‘blue’.
Super simple to decorate, you can easily decorate anyway you like.
Follow my recipe tutorial to make the Genoise sponge cake and you won’t go wrong.
Alternatively, use the principle idea with your favourite sponge cake.

Bundt Cakes
Easily the simplest cakes to make, with minimal or no decorating required, bundt cakes are an ideal option for your 4th July celebrations.
Here’s a selection below, of my bundt cake recipes in various flavours and sizes as well as a Gluten free carrot cake.
But you don’t only have to bake in the oven. Try my air fryer bundt cakes too.
Customize the bundts or mini bundt cakes, with red, white and blue sprinkles, berries & whipped cream/buttercream. Or use fruits like strawberries, raspberries, cherries, blueberries & more.
Layer Cakes
Make a layer cake like the Summer Berry Griestorte, with red & blue fruits on the top & sides of the cream covered cake. Or go more simple and use a single layer of cake, topped with cream & fresh berries. Try the air fryer, butter & flour-free Genoise, topped with cream, strawberry & blueberries (above). Or try the mango, strawberry & grape version (below).

Meringue
Learn how to make meringue & get the ‘white’ element for your red white & blue foods. Learn how to make Pavlova’s or mini nests. Not only that, learn how to make the French, Swiss & Italian meringue methods in my Meringue By 3 Methods lesson, which is also made in a small basket air fryer! So doubly perfect for a warm July 4th! (Check out the photos below of the 3 methods).
4th image above is by Diana, who made mini merignue nests for a Summer meringue challenge from a few years ago. She topped the meringues with homemade lemon curd, whipped cream & raspberries.
The Colours
For the ‘red’ use strawberries, raspberries, red grapes, cherries, red currants, rhubarb, small edible red flowers. For the blue think blueberries, blackcurrants, Concord grapes & elderberries. Or try some blueberry curd as shown in the photo below. White can be the cream, buttercream, vanilla cake. The three colours can also be represented by coloured sprinkles, sweets/candy or even flowers.
Think also about how you want to present your food. That can also have a nod to the flag colours, by using maybe a blue plate or white cake stand or platter. Napkins, both fabric & paper can also bring the colours together. Or even try with colourful drinks, straws etc. Even the re-usable ice cubes can be coloured.
Check out my Tea Party page, or even the Afternoon Tea page for ideas for what to bake, as well as using a red (or pink), white & blue theme with the crockery & linen. (see photos above).
Biscuits & Cookies
Make some easy cookies or sandwich cookies, and decorate for 4th of July with red white and blue sprinkles & white candy melts/chocolate. Here are some cookies that would be ideal. (*Photo below by follower Maureen Weston of my Gluten Free Red Velvet Oreo Style Cookies, that were also gluten-free) . Try some praline crackle (aka Christmas Crack), that can be topped with red white & blue sprinkles or other inclusions.
Or how about decorated macarons? Check out all the macarons recipes on my friend Sally’s site. She competed on the American version of The Great British Bake Off and is a talented baker, specializing in sourdough, fine detailed cookie decorating & is our Queen of macarons!
